In 2025, Sri Lankan school students reached unprecedented milestones on the global academic stage, demonstrating exceptional brilliance across international Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competitions. At the 22nd International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO 2025) held in Kedah, Malaysia, a talented 24-member national student delegation won an impressive haul of 4 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze Medals. Their collective excellence earned Sri Lanka a historic 4th place worldwide ranking in the international STEM Team Competition. Silver medalists included Himeth Kemsara Abeysinghe (Royal College, Colombo), D.M.M. Kavithma (Ananda College, Colombo), R. Akshath (Jaffna Hindu College), and N.B. Thenuk Winsitha (Central College, Badulla), highlighting how young talent from across every province can lead the world.
This national success was further magnified by Januki Vihasna Cooray of Badulla Central College, who secured a prestigious Bronze Medal at the 59th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad (IMChO 2025) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Competing against the foremost young scientific minds globally, these students proved that dedication, curiosity, and rigorous inquiry know no geographical boundaries. Their extraordinary achievements stand as a beacon of inspiration for school children across Sri Lanka, showcasing the power of STEM education and the nation’s rising generation of future scientists and innovators.
